School and home working together

Our Learning Steward model gives families a clear role without asking parents to become the teacher. Learning Stewards help students establish routines, stay engaged, and communicate when support is needed.

The academy provides instruction, curriculum, assessment, academic expectations, and school communication. Families provide the daily encouragement and oversight that help students make the most of learning from home.

From first exposure to genuine understanding

Courses at Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences are designed to move students beyond simply completing lessons. Each course gives students repeated opportunities to encounter, apply, discuss, and demonstrate what they are learning.

01

Learn

Students encounter new ideas through direct instruction, reading, guided notes, demonstrations, Scripture, primary sources, and carefully selected academic materials.

02

Practice

Assignments give students repeated opportunities to apply skills, work through problems, annotate texts, write, create, and strengthen understanding.

03

Discuss

Questions and Socratic discussion encourage students to explain their thinking, listen carefully, consider perspectives, and support ideas with evidence.

04

Demonstrate

Quizzes, exams, written work, projects, presentations, and other assessments show what students understand and can apply.

The Almanac

The Almanac provides practice and supplemental support within the Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences course experience. It gives students a structured place to review, practice, receive guidance, and build confidence before moving into formal assessment.

Lesson-aligned practice

Students complete practice connected directly to what they are learning so they can strengthen understanding before moving forward.

Guided support

Examples, prompts, and academic guidance help students work through difficult material without simply giving away the answer.

Preparation for assessment

Practice and review help students build confidence and demonstrate genuine understanding when they reach quizzes, exams, and other assessments.

Education with a larger purpose

Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences exists to help students grow in knowledge, wisdom, character, and faith. We value enduring ideas, careful reasoning, strong communication, and the study of the arts and sciences within a Christian understanding of truth.

Our aim is not simply to help students complete school. We want them to become thoughtful learners who can use what they know with integrity, responsibility, and service to others.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.”

Psalm 111:10, KJV

Understanding the academy’s model

Are classes live?

Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences uses flexible audio and video instruction rather than requiring students to attend daily live classes. Periodic Socratic webinars and discussion opportunities add conversation while preserving flexibility.

Does flexible learning mean there is no structure?

No. Students work within defined courses, assignments, assessments, academic expectations, and term schedules. Flexibility refers to how families organize the learning day within that school structure.

What does a Learning Steward do?

A parent or guardian helps establish routines, encourage engagement, and communicate when support is needed. Porter Hill Academy of Arts and Sciences remains responsible for curriculum, instruction, assessment, academic expectations, and school communication.

How does The Almanac support students?

The Almanac provides integrated practice and supplemental academic support. Depending on the course, students may use lesson-aligned practice, guided examples, review tools, progress information, and other resources that support mastery.

Can Arizona ESA funds be used toward tuition?

Eligible families may apply available Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account funds toward approved private-school tuition expenses. Families remain responsible for any tuition balance not covered by their available ESA funds.

What records are needed for enrollment?

Student records include a birth certificate, recent academic record, immunization record or exemption, and applicable student support, accommodation, or evaluation records. Families may send outstanding records after the enrollment form is submitted.
